My CNY won’t be like CNY without these

Some stuff aside from CNY all-time favourites like bakgwa, prawn cracker, egg roll, pineapple tart, haebee hiam.
Something more than visiting relatives and relatives’ visitings.
And of course, new clothes, CNY deco, angpaos.

Reunion brunch. In my family, we have our big fish big meat in the mid-morning of CNY eve. I dunno why is that so, but heck, who says reunion dinner must be a dinner? Ma will wake up super early on CNY eve to prepare the food, Pa will get ready with the stuff to pray to the deities in Chinese beliefs and our ancestors. While reading the extra thick special CNY edition of Sin Chew Jit Poh (It’s called Sinchew Daily now), the kids i.e. me n my siblings would have to chase the houseflies away, keep the house clean and help with the offerings and to burn the gold-silver paper. And of course, we will have almost the same dishes for dinner that day and duh, our 2^nd reunion meal. ;) This year is the 2^nd year that the attendance is not 100% in Lim’s family during CNY…

Malaysian TV CNY ads. Which are damn creative. Be it from Petronas or DIGI, they will always include multi-racial/family stuff in the ads. These ads usually take up a longer time than normal ads, around 2minutes. This year the main ad on tv is the one with Guangliang's YueDing[Promise] which trying to convey the message [I think]: “Do not let old folks celebrate CNY themselves. Go back home and celebrate together.” These kinda ads appear on tv during other festivals as well. E.g Hari Raya and Hari Merdeka[National Day]. Sometimes not only on tv but also on printed media. Kudos to the production team!

Stephen Chow’s movie on tv. Dunno since when his movie has been the regular CNY special tv program on either tv3, 8tv, ntv7 or ch8. and no matter how old the movie is, it can be sure that the jokes are still as funny as ever. Just watched Kungfu Hustle again on tv3. So damn farnie. I respect people with sense of humour. I respect-er people who can stimulate the sense of humour of others.

The aforementioned CNY special Sinchew Daily. Besides the normal pullouts, there’ll be this extra 24-page CNY pullout which tells u almost every CNY related stuff. And since media industry does have holidays during CNY, this 24page pullout will last for 2 days before the next fresh-from-oven Sinchew is delivered. And somemore they don’t even charge a single cent more than the normal price of RM1.30! [But from my own observation, they do reduce the number of pages in a few of the subsequent publications tho. Verification needed.]

Lessons learnt from uncle-auntie-father-mother-cousin’s talk. Every year there’ll be different topics center around different themes. Sometimes it feels good to just listen to them while eating all the CNY cookies. Nodding ur head once in a while when heard ur name being mentioned is always the nice move. ;) Somemore every new year my perspective will change by quite a lot. All these little talks among relatives will have different meaning and impact on me as a 20-year-old-soon-to-be. O.o Didn’t realize how much my ‘status’ has changed until I know that I already have 6 nephews + nieces. I'm a biao jiu and biao shu (in short, uncle) already. (Wait. My cousins’ children. Do I really call them nephews and nieces? Haha. I thot only in Chinese these kinda relative pronoun is complicated.)
